Our Strategy

RESOURCING SCHOOLS. BUILDING EQUITY.

B.Y. Funding is reimagining how schools are resourced — from the classroom to the capital. Our strategy centers schools as community anchors and invests in solutions that are flexible, dignified, and responsive to real needs.

Rather than one-size-fits-all funding, we prioritize school-led approaches that strengthen students, families, and educators while addressing gaps created by systemic underinvestment.

Our work is grounded in equity, community power, and execution — ensuring resources move where they matter most, when they matter most.

Bridging Equity by Funding Resourceful Education Efforts

THE BEFREE STRATEGY

BEFREE is B.Y. Funding’s flagship strategy for resourcing public schools. It is a community-driven framework designed to address both immediate needs and long-term equity by combining funding, capacity-building, and community engagement.

BEFREE recognizes that schools serving the highest-need students often face barriers not because of a lack of ideas or leadership — but because of limited access to flexible funding, infrastructure, and support. Our strategy exists to bridge that gap.

How it Works

The BEFREE Strategy is built on three interconnected pillars that address both the immediate realities schools face and the long-term systems that shape opportunity. Together, these pillars ensure schools are supported with dignity, flexibility, and community power.

We meet urgent needs with compassion and care — ensuring students have what they need to show up ready to learn. This includes essentials like uniforms, supplies, and school-based resource efforts that reduce financial strain on families and remove barriers to attendance and engagement. By addressing these needs early and thoughtfully, schools can create more stable, supportive learning environments.

Direct Student & Family Support

We partner with schools to design community-driven fundraising efforts that build pride, connection, and sustainable support. Rather than relying on multiple small fundraisers, schools work with B.Y. Funding to host well-planned events that raise meaningful resources while strengthening trust between families, educators, and the broader community. This approach allows schools to fund real needs on their own terms.

School-Centered Fundraising

Capacity Building for Long-Term Equity

We provide tools, knowledge, and support that help schools access funding, strengthen systems, and advocate for fair resource distribution. Through training, technical assistance, and research-informed strategies, we help educators and school leaders navigate funding landscapes and build infrastructure that supports lasting change — not just one-time solution

Together, these pillars form a strategy that moves beyond temporary fixes.
BEFREE aligns immediate support with long-term capacity, ensuring schools are resourced in ways that are sustainable, equitable, and rooted in community leadership.

THE STRATEGY IN ACTION

The BEFREE Strategy

The BEFREE Strategy aligns immediate support with long-term systems change — ensuring schools are resourced with dignity, flexibility, and sustainability.

Why Strategy Matters?

Schools are asked to do more every year with fewer flexible resources. Traditional funding models often restrict how money can be used, overlook community voice, and place additional burdens on educators.

B.Y. Funding’s strategy responds differently. We invest in approaches that trust schools, value community leadership, and recognize that equity requires both resources and infrastructure. Our work is designed not only to fill gaps, but to reduce them over time.

Strategy in Action

Through BEFREE, B.Y. Funding supports schools by:

  • Providing funding that moves quickly and flexibly

  • Supporting school-led fundraising and engagement efforts

  • Reducing out-of-pocket costs for educators

  • Strengthening systems that help schools access and sustain resources

  • Elevating community voice in how schools are supported

This approach allows schools to focus on what they do best: educating, supporting, and building community.
